Remembering Japan's Fukushima Daiichi Disaster … in San Clemente and San Onofre

Japan's Fukushima Daiichi disaster will be remembered–in San Clemente and San Onofre.

Activists from San Clemente Green, SanOnofreSafety.org, Citizens' Oversight Projects and Residents Organizing for a Safe Environment are organizing the commemorations scheduled for March 10-11. Naturally, the point of each will be to remind locals what happened in Japan could happen just south of the Orange County border.

The largest nuclear disaster since the Chernobyl meltdown of 1986 happened March 11, 2011, when the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami spurred equipment failures, nuclear meltdowns and radiation leaks at the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant.

“Remembrance of the Nuclear Disaster at Fukushima” is scheduled to run from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 10, inside the San
Clemente Community Center, 100 N. Calle Seville. Mothers
from Fukushima and Kyle Thiermann of Surfing for Change are scheduled to speak before a screening of the documentary Fukushima Never Again.

“The event will
conclude with a candlelight procession to honor those impacted by the
natural and man-made disaster at Fukushima,” say organizers.

A rally and protest are scheduled from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday, March 11, near the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS). Demonstrators plan to gather at the south gate on Basilone Road.
