OC Weekly Scoops Up 15 Orange County Press Club Awards, More Than Any Other Publication

With its 15 awards for stories published in 2008, OC Weekly won more Orange County Press Club honors than any other publication during a ceremony Thursday at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach.

The club's first journalism awards competition since 2002 also drew entries from the Orange County Register, Los Angeles Times, OC Metro, Daily Pilot and Coast, Riviera and Orange Coast magazines. Riviera scooped up the second-most awards with eight, followed by the Metro's five, the Register's four, the Pilot and Coast's two apiece and the Times and Orange Coast's one each.

The Weekly's first-place award winners were:

*Gustavo Arellano for the Real OC Award ("Last One: When San Juan Capistrano Boots Ignacio Lujano From His Orange Groves, OC's Citrus Era Will Officially End" ); Best Theater, Music and Entertainment Story ("The Naranjero Blues: Emilio Martinez Could Have Been Orange County's Woody Guthrie"); and, along with Edwin Goei, Best Food Story ("Brother Can You Spare a Taco?")

Upcoming Events

*R. Scott Moxley for Best Feature Story ("Hate & Death: When Gunner Lindberg Killed Thien Minh Ly, Was It Actually a Hate Crime?") and Best Columnist (Moxley Confidential)

*Nick Schou for Best Series (coverage of Orange County jail beatings)

*Matt Coker for Best Business Story ("Who's Your Addy? Adderall Has Been Hailed As a 'Miracle Drug' For ADHD Sufferers. But They're Not the Ones Using It")

Moxley was also a second-place finisher for Best News Story. Third-place awards were given to: Vickie Chang for Best Business Story; Arellano for Best News Story and Best Columnist; Coker for Best Feature Story and Best Theater, Music and Entertainment Story; and Schou and Coker (tie) for Humorous Story.
