As he did with Nader Elhuzayel a few weeks ago, Hizzoner sentenced the terror defendant's buddy Muhanad Elfatih M.A. Badawi to 30 years in the federal can.
Both 25 and from Anaheim, the men were found guilty of trying to help the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), a designated foreign terrorist organization.
Technically, Badawi was convicted in June of aiding, abetting and conspiring with Elhuzayel to provide material support to ISIL as well as federal financial aid fraud designed to generate funds for their scheme.
“Defendant Badawi was a radicalizer, recruiter and facilitator, and like codefendant Elhuzauyel, defendant Badawi aspired to die a martyr fighting jihad for ISIL,” prosecutors wrote in a sentencing memorandum filed with the court.
United States Attorney Eileen M. Decker called the successful prosecutions of Badawi and Elhuzayel “critically important to our national security.”
“The defendant, like his co-conspirator, pledged his allegiance to a terrorist organization instead of the United States, as he attempted to recruit and radicalize others to support the group, which calls for the murder of Americans,” added Deirdre Fike, the assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Office.
Badawi and Elhuzayel have been held in federal custody without bond since their arrests.
