In October 2004, deciding it was time to give something back, Chris gathered his capital, called in favors, found a nice office complex in Placentia and opened Palatial Mansion, a 4,000-square foot dungeon for aficionados of bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism, or BDSM.
“There's so much more to learn from BDSM than tying someone up to a post and beating them,” says Chris, who goes by his first name only and has enjoyed BDSM for 22 years. “I was able to get into a community, so I wanted to build a place the community can call home.”
And what a home. The Palatial Mansion has 10 themed rooms, including the Main Room (pillory, slanted spanking bench, yokes and stand stock), the School Room (a solitary desk, cabinet, and a colorful poster adorned with basic geometric shapes) and the Interrogation Room, about which Chris say, “We have a ball in there. It gets really hot.”
Every Tuesday, Chris hosts “Afternoon Delight,” an open house for novices, after which “they're welcome to sit down and talk with me for as long as they want.” The first Saturday of every month is the Palatial Mansion's spanking party (“never fewer than 50 people there,” Chris boasts) followed by the dungeon's monthly fetish ball. But nothing will quite compare to this Saturday's “Taste of the Forbidden.” Hosted by the Garden Grove-based Orange Coast Leather Alliance, the event features workshops on such subjects as cock-and-ball torture, waxing, interrogation techniques, single-tailing and fisting.
“The attendance is going to be insane,” says Chris. “It's going to be a Who's Who of the BDSM community, people like Midori and Mr. Dawson. You will never see a gathering of such legends again.”
