Paul Michael Barbour was ordered by U.S. District Judge Percy Anderson in Los Angeles to register as a sex offender for life, get psychological counseling and to have no contact with minors or work in a business involves children.

The 33-year-old had worked with Kids Artistic Review, the Cypress performance academy that sent Barbour around the country to events. But it was back home at Cypress College on May 31 when the mother of a young performer found a digital video camera hidden in the dressing room used by the girls.

He was arrested by the Cypress police, further investigation uncovered hundreds of photos and videos on his computer of preteen and prepubescent girls (as well as LSD and psilocybin mushrooms in his home), and the Orange County District Attorney's office brought charges against Barbour.

However, because some images had been collected of victims from around the country–a crime that crossed state lines, in other words–and the potential number of years in prison would be higher with a federal conviction, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California later took over the case, which did not allege Barbour actually produced the obscene material.

As part of a plea agreement Barbour signed in August, he admitted hiding the camera in the changing room used by teenage girls and acknowledged that photos and videos found on his computer depicted preteen and prepubescent girls. Court documents indicated Barbour admitted watching child pornography since he was a teenager and using hallucinogenic drugs.
