Mickey Lives in Anaheim But Anaheim-Santa Ana Ranks High for Lack of Rat and Mice Woes

The world's most famous rat, I mean mouse, of course resides in Anaheim.

However, when it comes to infestations of all the other rats and mice, the Anaheim-Santa Ana metropolitan area has been ranked as having among the least number of problems in the country.

The National Center for Healthy Housing released a report Monday based on 45 U.S. metropolitan areas, which found a rise in rats, mice, water leaks and other woes in 35 million homes, up from 30 million four years ago.

Record foreclosures and the national economic downturn are to blame, according to the nonprofit's researchers.

“It's a worrisome trend,” says Rebecca Morley, the Maryland-based group's executive director, noting the health woes that can befall residents from such problems.

San Antonio, Texas; Birmingham, Ala., and Memphis, Tenn., were rated the worst of the worst in the research.

But when it comes to the glass half full side of the equation, of the metro areas that had the least such woes, only San Jose and Indianapolis had fewer in the national rankings than Anaheim-Santa Ana, which is followed by Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Fla., and Phoenix, Arizona.

Other California areas included in the healthy rankings are: No. 6 Sacramento and San Bernardino-Riverside (tied); San Diego (tied for 12th); San Francisco and Oakland (among many cities tied for 16th); and Los Angeles-Long Beach (tied with two others at 34th).
