Letters From OC Weekly Readers
I was a kid back then, carrying drums for Goldenvoice, thrilled to be backstage at shows with Bad Manners (and then onstage, diving and surfing the crowd), hanging around Tishbone (Fishbone for the uninformed), bouncing at the Olympic [Vickie Chang's "His Golden Voice," Dec. 16]. Paul Tollett had the gift, and you could slowly see the shows, bands and venues getting bigger and bigger. He always was and is a class act. Good on him.

WHAT A UC IRVINE PHILOSOPHY DEGREE GETS YOU THESE DAYS
The dirty secret of American business is that job discrimination against the aged is subtle, but widespread and pervasive [R. Scott Moxley's Moxley Confidential, "Give This Incredible Man a Job," Dec. 16]. Businesses have figured out how to game the system without violating the law, aided and abetted by the so-called values of contemporary American culture in which there is a fetish and cult about youth.

MEXICANS ARE SPANIARDS, TOO!
I find it really interesting how people refer to the native people of Mesoamerica as "Mexicans" while the survivors of these same people don't call themselves that [Gustavo Arellano's ¡Ask a Mexican! Dec.16]. I mean, Mexican es la cruza de indio con Español; mestizaje, remember? Mexican is the crossover of those cultures. And that's exactly the reason modern-day indigenous people call you or me Mexicans or Blancos and exclude themselves from that term.
As much as I hate what los conquistadores did to "our ancestors," remember that those Europeans are as much a part of your abuelitos as the Indians. So, stop el romanticismo and embrace yourself.

It just reminds me of the Chicano Studies students who would ponder what the Americas would be like if the Spaniards had never arrived to take over—and assumed it would be so much better had they stayed in Spain. It goes both ways, too, just as some are quick to talk shit about the invading conquistadores. There are some who can't accept or come to terms with the fact their ancestors also included the "savage" natives. I've known people who talk up their Spanish roots, how they're Basque or whatnot, but won't acknowledge that those roots are intertwined with Mesoamerican roots as well. It's sad to deny one aspect of your history because it isn't as appealing or romantic.

MORE ON FULLERTON'S UNIFORMED CHOLOS
These crooked cops are nothing more than an organized gang of thugs, who are no different than any other bad gang [Marisa Gerber's "The Bullies In Blue," Nov. 25]. The ones who get away with all of the crap are usually bullies within their own department. It is time for the decent officers to make a stand, too. The officers need to police their own, and it is up to them to start setting an example on what to do with bad cops. It may not be popular, but it is what is right. For all of the low-life crooked cops who pull these kind of tactics, there need to be officers ready and willing to screw a gun into one of the crooked cops' ears who break the law and arrest them just like they would any other crook.
The one thing about the people who are in charge is they know what is going on and they need to be willing to do the same or get the hell out of the way and let someone who cares about their community do the job. Too many good officers leave the profession because they do not feel like dealing with these problems, when it is hard enough doing the job they were hired for in the first place. At some point, people will get tired of this crap and will take on the problem themselves. Look around you; people are killing cops everywhere because that is the only way citizens feel they can get rid of the bad apples. I will never forget the beautiful old buildings with the red-tile roofs that had Christmas decorations up and down the street, starting with the police department's. I wish you all luck getting your town back from the police.

Fuckin' nerds. Is this supposed to be similar to coning or planking or some shit prank just to get a video on YouTube [Hey You! "More Than 50 Billion Assholes Served," Dec. 9]? Wow, this is what the future of America looks like.
