Letters From OC Weekly Readers
Thanks for showcasing art-house theaters—especially the Art Theater in Long Beach [Karina Longworth and Matt Coker's "The State of the Art House," Feb. 4]. I have been turned on to movies there since junior-high school. I was introduced to foreign films as well as smaller-run domestic films that really helped to broaden my perspectives. It woke me up to the fact that there is life on other planets—our planet! Without the influence of such venues, I would be just another cardboard cutout strewn across some lobby of a multiplex in Anywhere, USA.

I went to the Kickin' Crab with a couple of chef friends not long after it opened, and we pretty much ordered one of everything on the menu Kickin' Style [Edwin Goei's "Crustacean Nation," Feb. 4]. We're fans of the Boiling Crab's flavors and were generally disappointed with the taste of the sauce at the Kickin' Crab. It's not garlicky/spicy like the one at Boiling Crab. Everything tasted a bit bland, so we ordered extra garlic and seasonings to kick the sauce up. The quality of the crayfish and crab were not comparable either, although the shrimp was great. Even though we were generally underwhelmed with our meal, I'm willing to give the place another shot.

Do they serve cupcakes and frozen yogurt? Maybe they could have a crawfish/frozen yogurt/cupcake food truck?

Wow, I must say I'm thankful to find a place to get my seafood in a bag without the ridiculous wait at Boiling Crab. This place is simply great! I came here on a Friday night, found parking as soon as I turned in, and was seated right away. This was already a huge plus because the parking and waiting at Boiling Crab sucks.
I ordered a Sam Adams, and my friend ordered a Heineken. Only $2.50 for domestic beers, and $3 for imports! Steal! Next we ordered a pound of shrimp each. We both ordered it Kickin' Style; I ordered spicy, and my friend had spicy-spicy. We also ordered a basket of the Cajun Fries. I actually loved the fries; they were thin and crunchy, with a good texture and the perfect amount of Cajun spices.
The food came out in a timely manner, and it smelled delicious. I peeled my first shrimp and went in for the kill; it tasted just as good as it smelled. I will admit it doesn't taste exactly like Boiling Crab—however, I liked it better! It has a very nice spicy-creamy note to it. The sauce actually goes into the shrimp and feels like it's been marinating for a while. At Boiling Crab, whenever I peel the shrimp, I feel like they lost 70 percent of their flavor. I also really like the fact that it had something in between medium and spicy-spicy. It was the perfect amount of spice for me.

You're right, man: This spot is going to have a rough time [Gustavo Arellano's Hole In the Wall "Flower Power," Feb. 4]. I covered Newport Beach until recently and didn't notice Café Lotus until maybe two weeks ago. The ratatouille crepe sounds fabulous. Nice review.

ROLL, BABY, ROLL
Maybe he was just trying to spend some quality time with his daughter [Hey, You! "Race Skater," Feb. 4]. Maybe a stranger approaching his daughter and asking her to skate made him uncomfortable. I'm pretty sure I would've reacted much the same way. Why does it have to have anything to do with you being Mexican? Sensitive much?

HAVING A BALL
I really hope there'll be handball in the Olympics in the near future [Michelle Woo's "Handball Wizard," Jan. 28].

Look, I could give two craps about handball, but Sal Dueñas is undeniably HOT!

AN INSIDE JOB
I spent some time in the OC jail 13 to 14 years ago, and this is exactly what it was like [Nick Schou's "'Images I Will Never Forget,'" Jan. 28]. If John Chamberlain did say [that he liked "children that are underdeveloped"], he intentionally committed suicide. The outcome was absolutely predictable, so the sentencing of the tools he used to kill himself was a bit harsh. Stay out of jail, kids.

Where are deputies Kevin Taylor and Jason Chapluk now? Parking-lot attendants? Mall cops? I'd love to know.
