Letters From OC Weekly Readers

“If They Take Out More and More Bus Routes, You’ll Lose 50 Percent of Your Demographic!”

I lived in Orange County for 12 years before moving to Los Angeles County [Spencer Kornhaber’s “End of the Line,” Jan. 15]. While I lived in the OC, I had to put up with what was essentially an afterthought: OC transit. The fact they are shutting down owl service to save a few bucks speaks volumes about the contempt they harbor toward those less fortunate and who are forced to rely upon the buses to get around. Clearly, this is pathetic beyond words.

That’s some good reporting! These night-owl bus riders should get a moped or a car that runs off used cooking oil. If you’re disabled, what the fuck are you doing waiting for the bus to pass by at 3 a.m.? If they keep making these cuts to daytime riders on routes from 4 a.m. to midnight, it will hurt the overall economy in Orange County. If people really needed the night-owl services, OCTA could have easily taken some money from the Bristol Street project. Taxpayers need to wise up! And . . . OC Weekly, if they take out more and more bus routes, you’ll lose 50 percent of your demographic!

Sadly, this article [Spencer Kornhaber’s “Signatures of the Times,” Jan. 15] is about a month late. The news this week is that Dale Tyler has admitted to paying “most, if not all” signature gatherers in cash. That is definitely illegal. Especially given his statement that he didn’t have addresses for many of them. He didn’t overlook the filing date; he knew his filing would land him in the middle of an investigation. Multiple crimes by Tyler, who is Larry Gilbert’s candidate of integrity—and that sums up Larry pretty well. He is a morally devoid human stain.

Wow, who knew suburbia city politics could get so insane? As I understand it, Lance MacLean’s term is up in November 2010—so why the heck are [Connie] Lee, Tyler and their cohorts so bent on trying to get him out just nine months shy of his term? And why wouldn’t Lee and Tyler comment for the article if they’ve got nothing to hide? Sure sounds fishy to me. For this and many other reasons, I will vote no on the recall—and vote for Dave Leckness in the event MacLean is recalled.

It is ironic that the deputies would support a guy who assaulted someone.

Wow [Hey, You! “Home Creepo,” Jan. 15]. Smart woman. That’s scary for anyone. Be careful, people.

What a world we live in. A person asks for some help, and he is immediately accused of attempted kidnapping and/or rape. An op-ed and cartoon to boot: For shame!

I’m a pretty tough girl, and that story gave me chills. This guy may be harmless, or he may not be, but I bet you wouldn’t want your mother, sister or daughter to take that chance. To the smart woman who did the right thing by protecting herself, I hope you were very clear about what happened when you asked for a security guard to escort you. Then store personnel can be on the lookout in case this guy returns with more “brake-light problems.”

The [website] illustration is of a white guy with red hair, yet the letter makes no mention of race or physical appearance, only of gender. Why is the image of an Anglo and not a Hispanic or black? Looks like a little subliminal racism to me.

Yet another fine article on marijuana in the OC Weekly [Dave Ferrell’s “A New Leaf,” Jan. 8]. But for all the fascinating facts and statistics Ferrell presented, he somehow neglected to include one important fact about marijuana—that smoking it isn’t the only way to ingest it. Ferrell says carcinogens in “marijuana smoke contain some of the same—and sometimes even more—of the cancer-causing chemicals found in tobacco smoke. Studies show that someone who smokes five joints per day may be taking in as many cancer-causing chemicals as someone who smokes a full pack of cigarettes every day.” While this is all true, I guess someone forget to tell Ferrell about vaporizers, edibles, drinks and other creative ways to safely use marijuana without smoking it. For a publication so heavily invested in promoting the virtues of marijuana through favorable articles and pages of dispensary ads, you dropped the ball by not including anything about alternative ways to use pot.
