#JusticeForDamini Locks Arms in Santa Ana and Irvine
"If there is somebody in this situation or this has happened to them, I think (this vigil) is a great example to them that if they come out and speak up, we have her back, we will stand with her, we will hold her hand, and we will lock arms."
-Minu Singh, the founder and honorary director of Sikh Women Now, as nearly 300 people gathered Friday at the Sikh Center of Orange County in Santa Ana to remember "Damini," the 23-year-old medical student who died Dec. 29 in Singapore after her brutal rape in Delhi.
Singh made the remarks to India-West, which noted a separate, simultaneous candlelight vigil for "Damini" was held at the Irvine Mandir, a Hindu temple, where devotional songs and hymns were sung.
Back in Santa Ana, some reportedly carried rectangular white signs with a black circle and the words "#JusticeForDamini," the Twitter hashtag phrase that has become an international cry for those united against violent crimes against women in wake of the young woman's death.
