UPDATED: THIS REPLACES "ANOTHER SANTA ANA JOHN DOE" AS THE VICTIM HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED.
Jaime Anica Olvera, 27, of Santa Ana, was standing on a sidewalk at Huylars Lane and West Fifth Avenue in Santa Ana around 7 p.m. July 23 when he was confronted by a robber, who was later identified as Eduardo Valencia,18, also of Santa Ana.
While the fighting ensued, a third man, later identified as Fabian Vargas Vega, 22, of Santa Ana, shot Olvera in the upper body. Valencia and Vega then fled, police say. When officers arrived to a 7:15 call in the 4200 block of West Fifth Avenue of "a shooting with a man down," Olvera was dead at the scene.
Detectives conducting a homicide investigation were following a vehicle containing two men shortly before 11:30 p.m. July 31 when the driver pulled over in the 300 block of North Jackson Street, according to police. The driver and passenger bolted out of the car on foot.
An unidentified detective chased the passenger, later identified as Vega, who, police say, made a threatening gesture after about a half block that prompted the detective to fire several rounds at Vega, who was struck multiple times. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police claim Vega was carrying a handgun that matches the description of the one used to kill Olvera.
The driver of the vehicle got away, but police on Aug. 1 arrested Valencia on suspicion of murder and felony street terrorism--a sentencing enhancement for alleged gang crimes. He was booked into Santa Ana City Jail, where his bail was set at $1 million.
Police do not believe Olvera belonged to a gang.
