Jose Miguel Avalos Held in Beating Death of Gustavo Avalos Salazar in Santa Ana: Update

ORIGINAL POST, SEPT. 11, 10:28 A.M.: Santa Ana police are seeking the killer of a 24-year-old man who was beaten to death and left on the sidewalk in the 1000 block of West Walnut Street last night.

Gustavo Avalos Salazar apparently got into a fistfight near Edinger Avenue and Flower Street before police were called around 9:45 p.m. to the Walnut Street location to help an injured man.

Salazar, who suffered from head injuries, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Cpl. Anthony Bertagna, the Santa Ana Police spokesman.

UPDATE NO. 1, SEPT. 11, 2:19 P.M.: KCAL/Channel 9 is reporting an arrest has been made in Gustavo Avalos Salazar's killing.

UPDATE NO. 2, SEPT. 11, 4:19 P.M.: Police have identified the man arrested in the beating death of Gustavo Avalos Salazar as Jose Miguel Avalos, 27, of Santa Ana.

Avalos was booked into the Santa Ana city jail.

KCAL/Channel 9 previously reported Salazar and a woman were having a verbal argument on the street before a man stepped in and things got physical.

An autopsy on Salazar is scheduled for Thursday.
