The Santa Ana Police Department (SAPD) at the time called Sura a documented gang member, but the story with the arrest of the three suspects is that they approached him in a car and asked which gang he belonged to. He answered he was not a gang member and was shot multiple times anyway, police now say.
The shooting around 10 p.m. Nov. 13, when the back of a Garden Grove police vehicle was struck by gunfire, happened as officers were secretly watching burglary suspects near First and Euclid streets in Santa Ana.
Police from Santa Ana and Garden Grove concluded the same gang was involved in the October and November incidents, and a joint investigation led to the arrests of the suspect.
On Thursday, Melendez was arrested at her Anaheim job site, Martinez was popped at his Santa Ana residence, and Alcala and several guns were picked up at the Motel 6 on Dyer Road in Santa Ana.
Alcala and Martinez are said by police to be documented gang members on parole, while Melendez is described as a gang associate.
