It's No Red Bull: Harbor High Seeks National Surf Crown
Newport Harbor High School's surf team has a chance to be crowned the national champion as it competes in the Red Bull Riders Cup National Championship this weekend at Upper Trestles at San Onofre State Beach south of San Clemente.
Harbor High's Sailors, who were the Orange County Regional Champion, are scheduled to compete in the second heat of the day against Satellite High School, the Central Florida Regional Champ, at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Opening up the competition at 10 a.m. is Mira Costa, the South Bay Regional Champion, against Aptos, the regional winner from Santa Cruz. Harbor High's quarter-final is followed by Ocean City, the New Jersey Regional Champ, against Golden State winner, Malibu. The quarter-final finale pits the San Diego region's San Dieguito Academy against North Florida's New Smyrna High School.
It's a single-elimination tournament with each quarter-final winner returning Sunday for the semi-finals and then finals. The final is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. with the awards ceremony slated for two hours after that.
