Andrew Thompson was supposed to turn 26 today, but instead of the ritual blowing out of the candles his birthday was marked with the sentencing of the killer who stabbed him in the heart.
David Louis Vinci Jr., 25, of Anaheim—who was found guilty by a jury on July 2 of one felony count of voluntary manslaughter with a sentencing enhancement for the personal use of a deadly weapon—was sentenced to 12 years in state prison.
Vinci was at a party with several friends around 12:30 a.m. June 3, 2007, when Sean Pickett, 19, arrived and began arguing with his girlfriend, who was hosting the party in her Anaheim apartment. Vinci and other friends joined in, and it eventually escalated into a physical attack on Pickett.
Pickett ran away and called his friends, including then 23-year-old Thompson, for protection. Now with some muscle behind him, Pickett returned to the party and resumed his argument with his girlfriend, who told him to leave. As Pickett, Thompson and some of their friends were leaving, Vinci yelled at them from a second-story balcony before running downstains with a knife and stabbing Thompson once in the heart, killing him.
