That was about it as far as social media coverage of the event from the eight-term congresswoman, who was later photographed in an evening gown at the Inaugural Ball. But two Republican colleagues from the Orange County congressional delegation reacted with skepticism (natch) to President Barack Obama's 18-minute inaugural speech.
Rep. John Campbell (R-Newport Beach) famously raised eyebrows among OC Republican Central Committee members when he praised Obama's 2009 inauguration speech and oratory skills. He obviously knew to tone it down this time.
“This one, although I would argue a very powerful and, as one would expect, well-delivered speech, I think was considerably more controversial probably than what he said four years ago,” said Campbell (via Politico). “We'll have to agree on some things to get some stuff done, but I don't know, the speech didn't inspire me in that direction.”
Unlike some local Republicans who blew off celebration of the inauguration–cued naturally by Fox News reporting the third Monday of January is the most depressing day of the year–Campbell hosted a reception in his D.C. office for constituents in town for inaugural events.
Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Carlsbad), who district once again includes parts of southern Orange County, was more sharp in his Obama speech criticism, as you'd expect from one who has viciously pursued a contempt case against the president's Attorney General, Eric Holder.
“The words were code for a progressive agenda,” Issa says via the same Politico piece. “I'm hoping that the president will recognize that compromise should have been the words for today, and they clearly weren't. We were hoping that he would use this day to reach out to all Americans and all parties. He clearly did not.”
Looked for similar vitriol from Reps. Ed Royce (R-Fullerton) and Dana Rohrabacher (R-Huntington Beach), found bupkis. Same for Rep. Alan Lowenthal (D-Long Beach) and, to bring this post full circle, Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-Lakewood), whose districts include parts of OC.
Loretta's sister is, however, being propped up by the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda as a potential Latina candidate for still-open Cabinet posts in the Obama White House.
As you'd expect, Fox News portrayed the letter as bullying. Depressing indeed.
