[Hey, You!] Recreational Habit

I work at a pharmaceutical-research company, whose employees can come into work any time before 9 a.m. Many arrive before 8 a.m. and stay until 6 p.m., later if necessary. You're the research associate who constantly complains about being passed over for promotion. To your credit, you're a good worker—when you're working. Every day, you show up late, then head straight to the cafeteria for breakfast and don't return for half an hour. This doesn't stop you from taking a two-hour lunch and 20-minute break each afternoon to stretch your legs. On the days you're not sneaking out an hour before quitting time to play basketball, you're going straight home at 4:45 p.m. Taking into account the time you spend on e-mails, surfing the Net and socializing with co-workers, I'd say you do less than five hours of work each day. I notice these things, and I'm just a lowly mail clerk working 10 times as hard and making a fraction of your salary. I'm sure your supervisors notice it, too. That's why you never get promoted.
