Halloween Party, Indie Rom Com, Tries to Scare Up Oscar Best Song Nomination

It may be a long shot, but Long Beach-based producers of a very independent film shot over 13 days in three homes in Belmont Shores say they are vying for an Academy Award nomination for best original song.

Perhaps less difficult than trying to generate Oscar buzz was settling on “Voodoo” as the song among 28 originals in the rom com Halloween Party.

The Hollywood press is filled with stories the Academy this year loosened its requirements in hopes of ensuring that, unlike recent years past, there are at least five original songs from movies nominated for Oscars. That created what the Academy referred to as a “short list” of 75 songs, including tunes sung by Adele, Katy Perry and the all-star cast of Les Miserables.

Variety, The Hollywood Reporter and go-to pubs don't mention Halloween Party or “Voodoo” among the 75, but one blogging Oscar watcher already put the song in a shorter short list of 20. The song was written by CJ Watson and Bruce Michael Miller and sung by Watson and Donna Britton.

The movie is about “a girl looking for love on the most deceptive night of the year.”

Hmmm, seems like it should be called Election Night Party then.
