Director David Zeiger led a great audience exchange with Laguna Beach Film Society members the night of Jan. 12, 2007, when his thought-provoking documentary Sir! No Sir! was shown in the Festival of Arts' Forum Theatre.
His film examines in-uniform, anti-war acts dating back to the Vietnam War, some of which were hatched in the Oleo Strut coffeehouse in Killeen, Texas, that served service people out of Fort Hood.
Tonight, Oleo Strut comes to Fountain Valley.
That is, the movement spawned by places like the Texas java joint comes to Orange County as the Anti-War GI Coffeehouse West Coast Tour stops at 6:30 p.m. in a private residence in Fountain Valley.
Three GI coffeehouse centers are touring the Left Coast through March: Under The Hood at Fort Hood; Coffee Strong at Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Seattle; and The Clearing Barrel at the U.S. Army Garrison in Kaiserslautern, Germany.
Why? Because "as President Obama's recent attempt to launch war on Syria shows, militarism hasn't ended with a new president or the end of the U.S. occupation of Iraq," explain organizers.
"The killing of innocent civilians and U.S. troops in Afghanistan continues, as more deployments are scheduled. The U.S. is initiating new kinds of wars, with drones and special forces, in Africa and the Middle East. Twelve percent of U.S. troops are currently deployed in 150 countries around the world."
At the local events, representatives explain why your support is needed to continue outreach efforts with military personnel at those key bases. Tonight's "Make Love, Not War" Buffet Supper and Talk is co-presented by Military Families Speak Out of Orange County. There is a $10 suggested donation.
