Back in 2011, art museums across Southern California collaborated on telling the multi-faceted history of the Los Angeles modern art scene in a series of exhibits titled “Pacific Standard Time: Art in LA 1945-1980.” The epic art event included a variety of content like the influences of LA's punk scene on the art world at MoCA to the subversive works of UC Irvine artists in the '70s at Laguna Art Museum. The next Pacific Standard Time plans to delve even deeper into SoCal history in recognizing the impact of Latin American culture in Southern California and the artistic movements that amplified these cultural exchanges in its upcoming site collaboration “Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA”.
The Getty Foundation, the forces behind PST, released news of the event earlier this week, along with the news of the grants they will award to each individual institution to research and cultivate the exhibits for its launch in September 2017. Of course, OC museums like OCMA and Laguna Art Museum will be in on this adventure, as well as UC Irvine and Cal State Long Beach's galleries, but to find out what they and other sites in Orange County will have in store, read on after the jump.

Institution: Cal State Long Beach University Art Museum
Grant Award: $100,000
Exhibit: a retrospective of the work of Argentinian artist, filmmaker and photographer David Lamelas, who worked in the '60s and '70s. The exhibit will explore Lamelas' work through a series of his experimental films, performance documentations, and architectural designs- called “interventions”- one of which will be constructed for the exhibit.
Institution: Laguna Art Museum
Grant Award: $92,000
Exhibit: a series of historical documents from maps, landscape paintings, photos, and decorative pieces that illustrate the long-standing relationship of Mexico and California from the 19th century to 1930.
Institution: Museum of Latin American Art
Grant Award: $95,000
Exhibit: a look at the influence of spiritual practices in the Caribbean after the arrival of African slaves dating from the colonial era of Afro-Caribbeans to art practices of modern artists who use elements of spirituality like Voodoo, Santeria and Macumba, and how over time those religions were deemed in the changing political climate.
Institution: Orange County Museum of Art
Grant Award: $170,000
Exhibit: the kinetic sculptures of South American artists Jesus-Rafael Soto, Julio Le Parc and Carlos Cruz-Diez, whose work influenced preceded the art of the Los Angeles light and space movement in the 1960s.
Institution: UC Irvine
Grant Award: $75,000
Exhibit: an exploration of the two worlds of UCI alum Gilbert (Magu) Lujan Magulandia (the space of the artist and his work) and Aztlan (the mythical center of the Mexican Aztecs and home for Chicanos), through artworks and archives of the artist.
