A Woodbridge High School freshman was stabbed during lunch at the Irvine campus this afternoon, but by the time the meal break had ended another freshman was in custody for alleged assault, according to police.

Irvine Police got the call just before 12:40 p.m. that one male freshman student had been stabbed by another freshman male student, according to Farrah Emami, the department spokeswoman. Because they are minors, the names of the victim and suspect are not being released.

“The victim is conscious, breathing, and was transported to an area hospital with a serious but non-life-threatening injury,” Emami says in a statement.

His presumed attacker fled the home of the Warriors on foot but was located and arrested at his nearby residence around 1:10 p.m., Emami says.

“Students at Woodbridge High School were on their lunch break at the time of the incident,” she notes. “The school was not locked down, as the suspect was detained before the end of the lunch hour and the return of students to campus.”

School resources officers and Irvine Police detectives are on campus conducting an investigation and have located the weapon, Emami says. Though this is considered an isolated incident and no other students were threatened or endangered, police, school and Irvine Unified School District officials are providing support for students and staff and communicating with parents, the spokeswoman adds.
