Ex-OC Sheriff's Applicant Under Investigation for Fraud

Beau Babka, the Utah lawman who applied to become Orange County's sheriff in the wake of Mike Carona's resignation to (unsuccessfully) fight corruption charges in 2008, is under investigation for committing fraud.

According to the Salt Lake City Tribune, Babka–a Cottonwood Heights cop who has lived in Laguna Niguel with his wife–is on leave after questions about his use of a city credit card to buy gas for his personal vehicle surfaced.
The paper couldn't reach Babka for a comment, but Cottonwood officials said cops are prohibited from misusing public money and felony charges could be filed, although no determination has yet been made.

Babka, who has run unsuccessfully for Congress as a Democrat in Utah, lost his bid for the Orange County Sheriff's Department job to Sandra Hutchens, the county's first female sheriff, whom supervisors appointed and in June won the job outright in an election.
