Derek Bowen Stabbed to Death in Laguna Niguel But It May Have Been Self Defense

You don't really think of Laguna Niguel as a hotbed for fatal stabbings, but there were actually two on Monday, Labor Day. Besides the one blamed on wanted parolee Craig Tanber, there was another blamed on a 73-year-old man. But he, unlike Taber, may not be looking at a murder rap.

At press time, the Orange County Sheriff's Department was still investigating the circumstances of 49-year-old Derek Bowen's death from being stabbed at 31432 Isle Vista, Laguna Niguel, around 5:20 p.m. Monday.

Bowen, who died at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo about an hour later, was related to the 73-year-old who stabbed him, according to sheriff's spokesman Lt. Jeff Hallock.

Deputies who arrived at the house in response to a domestic violence call were greeted out front by an elderly man covered in blood,” said Hallock, who added a family disturbance involving four relatives devolved into a physical altercation and Bowen being stabbed, perhaps in self defense.

Like Bowen, the 73-year-old, who admitted to being the one who did the stabbing, was taken to the hospital with injuries, Hallock said.

Detectives will continue to investigate the stabbing and refer the case to the Orange County District Attorney's office to determine if charges are necessary, Hallock said.
