DA Adviser Mike Schroeder Pleads Guilty To Halloween DUI & Issues Apology

Michael J. Schroeder--former chairman of the California Republican Party, a close adviser to Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas and the co-owner of a chiropractic insurance company--pleaded guilty today to DUI, according to Al Stokke, Schroeder's attorney.

A California Highway Patrol officer spotted Schroeder in the wee hours on the morning after last Halloween, stopped him on the 55 Freeway near the 405 and cited him for driving under the influence.

Through Stokke, Schroeder, who is out of the country on vacation, issued the following statement:

"I instructed my attorney to enter a guilty plea to a first time DUI offense and accept the standard terms and conditions. The penalties are severe, as they should be. I deeply regret driving with a .11 blood alcohol level. It was important to me to accept the consequences of my mistake at the earliest possible proceedings because I have lost two close family members to drunken driving and have always been against drunken driving. I apologize for my actions, particularly to my family and friends for any embarrassment it has brought to them and I will never repeat this behavior."

Schroeder has been married to Rackauckas' chief of staff, Susan Kang Schroeder.
