Chair-Tossing, Guard-Conking Riot at Juvie

A riot broke out at Orange County's Juvenile Hall in Orange Saturday night, with 27 boys fighting one another and a guard getting hit in the head with a flying chair.

Deputy juvenile correctional officer Stacy Androus reports she was briefly knocked out by the chair and can't recall the entire fracas.

Anyone else smell a lawsuit--or at the very least a worker's comp claim?

The Orange County Register has the dirty details.

Smaller fights are common at juvie, but one 10-year veteran officer tells the Reg, "the institution hadn't seen anything like this before."

The Orange County Probation Department, which operates the facility, described the 8:20 p.m. incident as a "major disturbance."

Held in a common room where wards can watch television, the fight seemed to have been planned as it did not break out until moments after Androus stepped away to supervise trips to the bathroom.

She returned to find something akin to the Blazing Saddles brawl scene.

"All 27 kids were up and throwing chairs, throwing fists, doing two-on-ones," the nine-year vet told the daily. "This is the only time I ever witnessed every single minor on the floor up and swinging."

She took the chair to the noggin while pinning one boy to the floor.

"As I grabbed and rolled is when everything went out," she reportedly said. "I don't remember the hit. I remember waking up with pain."

The 34-year-old was treated at UCI Medical Center for what she called "a basic concussion type of thing."

If anyone got the license plate of that truck, please tell her.
