Buena Park Checkpoint Tonight, Anaheim's is Saturday, Many Anti-DUI Ops til Labor Day

The Buena Park Police Department is holding a DUI/drivers license checkpoint from 7 tonight to 2 a.m. Saturday in the 8000 block of La Palma.

It's just one of several anti-DUI enforcement efforts planned around Orange County through Labor Day (Sept. 3).

Anaheim piles on from 6 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday, but you have to guess where that checkpoint is going to be.

According to the countywide “Avoid the 38” anti-DUI task force, other stops are coming up in: San Juan Capistrano (Friday, Aug. 31, 6 p.m.-2 a.m.), Brea (Aug. 31, 6 p.m.-2 a.m.); and Cypress and Placentia (dates to be announced).

Saturation patrols, where streets known for DUI collisions and arrests are flooded with patrols, are planned from 8 p.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday in Placentia and Garden Grove.

Exact dates and times have not been released by other agencies conducting saturation patrols throughout the Labor Day weekend campaign, which include the police departments of Laguna Beach, Westminster, La Habra, UC Irvine, Los Alamitos, Anaheim, Orange, Cal State Fullerton and Tustin.

The same date/time ambiguity surrounds an operation by the Buena Park Police Department and Orange County Sheriff's Department to serve DUI warrants, as well as a sheriff's court sting.

Is the ambiguity and wide swath of enforcement meant to coax us into simply not drinking and driving to avoid the hassle? Probably. Are authorities getting into our heads to control our actions? Stop putting words in my mouth!

We do know this much: funding for the Avoid the 38 Campaign–as in the 38 Orange County law enforcement agencies–is provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Learn more at www.californiaavoid.org.

Can I have my keys back now, officer?
