Bill Burr, MST3K Crew and Cartoon Mike Tyson Featured Among 5 Small Screen Can't Misses
Season 2 of Newsreaders begins tonight with a new host.
I can't speak for you, but here are five things coming to small screens that I don't want to miss.
The absurd mocku-news magazine series from the creators ofChildren's Hospital
(Rob Corddry, Jonathan Stern and David Wain) returns for its second season on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim tonight--with new host Reagan Biscayne (Alan Tudyk ofSuburgatory
). Alison Becker, Beth Dover, Dannah Phirman and Ray Wise return as cast members and guests this season include Malin Akerman, Billy Ray Cyrus, Jenna Fischer, Rob Huebel, Tom Lennon, Rob Riggle and, in tonight's premiere episode, David Hasselhoff.
Premiering Monday, also on Adult Swim, is this animated series that takes "the fight from the boxing ring to the streets ... by solving mysteries!" The Mike Tyson Mystery Team includes the legendary ear-chomping boxer, the Ghost of the Marquess of Queensberry, Mike's adopted Korean daughter, Yung Hee, and a pigeon who was once a man. Tyson, Norm Macdonald andCommunity
's Jim Rash are among the voice artists. Executive producers areTeen Titans Go!
's Sam Register andRobot Chicken
's Hugh Davidson, who worked together onMAD
andThe Looney Tunes Show
. To promote the premiere, a Mike Tyson Mysteries Scavenger Hunt Mystery invades 10 major U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, Saturday through Monday. Go to AreMysteriesReal.com for clues on where to find this Mike Tyson mini-statue:

The National Geographic Channel, a.k.a. NatGeo, has ordered two more episodes to be shown some time in December of the RiffTrax team commenting hilariously over movies or TV shows. In case you didn't know, RiffTrax is the main final cast ofMystery Science Theater 3000
, Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy (Tom Servo) and Bill Corbett (Crow T. Robot). See previous episodes atRiffTrax.com/TV
. Need even more?Mashable
has RiffTrax riffing over scenes fromIt's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
. They'll be doing aRiffTrax Live
un-skinning of the awful JLo filmAnaconda
that will be beamed into movie theaters countywide live Oct. 30 and repeating Nov. 4. That event opens witha preview clip
of the NatGeo shows. Live Dec. 4 will be the theatrical release ofRiffTrax Live: Santa Claus
. Almost 500 riffed movies, RiffTrax Live events, TV programs, short films and blockbuster commentary tracks stream live atRiffTrax.com
You'll notice the Season 3 trailer above is mostly not in English. Don't worry, the ultimate lutefisk-out-of-water black comedy features subtitles and a bit more of our native tongue, especially from lead character Frank "The Fixer" Tagliano (Steven Van Zandt). Little Steven plays a former gangster who shares the look, voice and occupation of hisSopranos
' character Silvio Dante, making a new life for himself under the federal witness protection program in Lillehammer, Norway. The next eight episodes of the Netflix original series go up on Nov. 21, with Van Zandt making his directorial debut in the Season 3 finale. Like the previous two seasons, Van Zandt also writes, produces and composes music on the show, and given his awesome curating duties on his Underground Garage channel, I suspect he has a hand in choosing the changing Norwegian bands that perform in Frank's nightclub.

Also from Netflix and premiering some time in 2015 is a new, half hour animated series that's based on the comedy of standup Bill Burr, whose Monday Morning Podcast is the go-to soundtrack for my nightly bouts of insomnia. Burr will voice Frank Murphy, the patriarch of a family in the 1970s, "a time when you could smack your kid, smoke inside and bring a gun to the airport," note the producers. "F is for Family is the show I've always wanted to do," says Burr, whose New England family often surfaces in his comedy. "It captures all the characters of my childhood the way I remember it to be. ... It's going to be a lot of fun to tell these stories." Laura Dern and Justin Long provide the voices of the family's mom and oldest son respectively. Burr created the show with Emmy winner Michael Price (The Simpsons), and they, Vince Vaughn and Peter Billingsley are executive producers. Vaughn and Billingsley's Wild West Television produces the six-episode series with Gaumont International Television, which is tapping into the expertise of Gaumont Animation in France for their first foray into animation in the U.S.
