Televangelist Benny Hinn, who is known for laying his hands on the ill faithful and "curing" them with the power of Christ, needed a handjob of his own last week.
The 63-year-old leader of Benny Hinn World Media Center in Aliso Viejo suffered heart problems in Brazil and was admitted to the intensive care unit in an undisclosed Orange County hospital.
But his daughter later reported that Hinn was up, alert and expected to make a full recovery, and the man of God told Charisma News, "This is a challenge, but I'm getting good reports. We don't have all the answers ... as we get older, our bodies need repair."
"In other news, Benny Hinn has a heart," wrote someone in the peanut gallery.
That someone was Terry Firma, the Friendly Atheist blogger at Patheos.com, who found the Gospel Herald's account of the recovery by the "pious charlatan" lacking.
"What the publication doesn't mention is that that's thanks to the skilled intervention of nurses and doctors, and thanks to pharmaceutical science," Firma writes.
"When Benny Hinn gets sick, he doesn't mess around with faith healing. He goes to a hospital. What does he know that he's not telling his followers?"
Jessica Hinn Koulianos, the pastor's oldest daughter, reported on BennyHinn.org that her father was in Brazil for an intense ministry that catered to crowds of more than 100,000 people. When he returned this last weekend, he began complaining of shortness of breath, had a heart rate that reached 200 beats-per-minute due to an atrial fibrillation issue and was treated for lack of oxygen in his bloodstream.

"Once he got in the hospital he experienced almost immediate relief and has continued to grow stronger each day," Hinn Koulianos writes. "At this moment, his physicians are conducting thorough tests, the results of which have been very positive. He is alert and in good spirits, and we expect he will be released later this week."
Still, the family is asking for prayers, and near as I can tell there is no collection plate attached.
