UPDATE NO. 2, AUG. 7, 2:44 P.M.: Arelene Kathryn Bautista was to be arraigned today on an involuntary manslaughter count for the shooting death of her boyfriend Luis Vidal, the Orange County District Attorney's office (OCDA) announced.
The criminal count is felony involuntary manslaughter by lawful act in an unlawful manner. According to the state penal code and legal dictionaries, involuntary manslaughter by lawful act in an unlawful manner can refer to picking up a gun with no intent of shooting someone, the gun accidentally fires and someone dies. The OCDA arraignment announcement only states Vidal was shot outside their mobile home in Garden Grove. Bautista also faces a sentencing enhancement for the personal use of a firearm and up to 14 years in state prison with a conviction, says the OCDA, which intended to request the 20-year-old be held on $80,000 bail at her arraignment this afternoon in Santa Ana.
