Alicia Kozameh, OC Weekly People Issue Star, to be Honored With All-Day Symposium at Chapman!

Alicia Kozameh, the author, educator, and activist featured in the Weekly's first ever People Issue last month, will be honored with an all-day symposium at Chapman! Before festivities and panels commence tomorrow, the university has been gracious enough to link to our profile on the 'Hypnotic Novelist' from the homepage of their website.

Kozameh, as readers will recall, was a political prisoner in her youth for three years during the 70's as a murderous dictatorship ruled in Argentina. Her experiences in those times and subsequent life in exile frame much of her literary work.

The Ethics, Aesthetics and Acrobatics of the Written Word symposium invites scholars, family, friends and students in celebration of the Chapman professor's accomplishments!

Kozameh has authored seven Spanish language novels, three of which have been translated into English, with Ostrich Legs most recently released earlier this year. She has also edited two anthologies, written a collection of short stories and a book of poetry.

Her work has been translated in numerous languages including German, Italian, and Portuguese. A French theater troupe has even interpreted Impression of Heights, one of her short stories about political imprisonment, into a stage production.

With such internationalist cred, it's no wonder that tomorrow's event invites scholars from around the world from as far away as Austria, Brazil and France!

Kozameh, who recently turned 60 last month, will have a panel examine her life and words to start off the morning. After breaking for lunch, poetry and multilingual readings of the author's work will follow. The symposium continues on with another panel looking at the craft of translating and interpreting her innovative literary voice.

Coming from her own classroom, ten of Professor Kozameh's creative writing students have put together a tribute to their teacher for the afternoon. Kozameh will follow with closing comments and thoughts.

After that, break out the Malbec and pour the wine for a reception and book signing of her English translated novels Steps Under Water, 259 Leaps, the Last Immortal and Ostrich Legs. If anyone ever wanted to know what Alicia Kozameh is all about all in one day, the symposium is free to any and all who wish to come!

Ethics, Aesthetics and Acrobatics of the Written Word at Chapman University's Doy and Dee Henley Reading Room, Second Floor. Leatherby Libraries. 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
