A rugby fan with real balls – though not lately

Super Bowl weekend … no better time to acknowledge the ultimate, all-time, over-the-top act of devotion to one's team.

Oakland Raider hardcore sociopaths with their frothing-at-the-mouth, kick-the-crap-out-of-the-visiting-fans rabidity? Not even close. Green Bay/Minnesota/any cold-weather-team supporters stripped to the waist, or bikinis, at 20 below? Rank amateurs. Tattooed facially with team colors, attended every home game since 1973 and named his kids (girls included) after the one championship-year starting defensive line? Paltry.

(Warning: The following true story is NOT for the fainthearted – and WILL make every male reading it wince.)

Rugby fan Geoffrey Huish, 31, announced before his beloved, underdog Welsh played England: “If Wales win, I'll cut my balls off.” Friends ignored it as run-of-the-mill hyperbole.

Wales, in a massive upset, beat the world champions 11-9.

In surely an unmatchable – nay, defining – “nuts to you” gesture toward one's doubters, Huish severed his testicles with wire cutters and put them in a bag to show to fellow drinkers at Leigh Social Club, Caerphilly, South Wales.

Police and an ambulance were called after Huish collapsed from loss of blood. He was taken to hospital but surgeons could not reattach the severed parts. He was then admitted to a psychiatric ward for observation.

A local reported that Huish had been on medication and should not have been drinking.
