Top Five Comics to Watch Out For in 2013
It's been a good year in the world of comedy and in 2012 we once again got to talk to some kick ass comics. We're not saying goodbye or that we want to put all those greats behind us, we're just saying that with a new year comes a new spotlight on another batch of stand-up comics that are making big moves and that you'll hopefully have a chance to catch in 2013. It takes a lot to get up in front of people but comics take command of the stage, they enlighten us, they gross us out, they make us feel bad for them (kidding), and hopefully, ya know, make us laugh. And let's be honest, no one hates to laugh. So, when you've had enough and the time hits, check out these Five Comics to Watch Out For in 2013 to provide you just what you need to start your New Year off with a bang. OK, that might have come out wrong...
5. Grant Cotter
We had the chance to talk to Grant in 2011 and since then, his career has been blowing up. He hosts shows and has been a regular at hot spots in and around the O.C. like the Improv, the Laugh Factory, and Hennessy's, and has also been given major stage time at various clubs around L.A. as well. But Grant isn't just a one note comic, he's also getting air time all over TV appearing on Food Network's "Mystery Diners" and even had the chance to spout out the 2012 slogan "YOLO" (among other things) on America's Court with Judge Ross. When 2013 hits, Grant will be recording a full length CD for SideOneDummy Records and because of his witty nature, entertaining delivery, and his boyish charm, we're pretty positive this coming year will be the year of Grant Cotter.
4. Jonny Loquasto
Jonny is another comic that we had the pleasure of talking to and who has been busy as a motherfucker performing nationally and of course, hosting and entertaining crowds all around L.A. and Orange County. He kills the stage with his hilarious stories, timing, and extremely relatable humor, he's got a bunch of awesome sketch videos and shows on-line, he's a super sports junkie who does hosting and interviews for KDOC's wrestling, and as if all of that wasn't enough, Jonny also has a Master's Degree in Physical Therapy and does his part to bring awareness to pediatric cancer through nonprofit Angel 34. Up to this point in Jonny's career, it would seem like this hard working comic does it all but we're pretty positive that in 2013 he'll be doing so much more and honestly, we can't wait to see it!
3. Sammy Obeid
This diligent and forever grinding Nor Cal native is doing big things and if you're not familiar, it's time to get in the know. Sammy has had the chance to perform along with some comedy greats like Dana Carvey and Russell Peters, he's been on America's Got Talent, and even had the opportunity to show off some skills on the Food Network's, "Throwdown! with Bobby Flay." All of that doesn't even begin to scratch the surface when it comes to what Sammy has to offer. He's the founder of KO Comedy and been nationally-touring all over dropping smart and thought provoking comedy that everyone can (and should) get down with. In 2013, this comedic powerhouse is no doubt going to be doing even bigger things so do yourself a solid and check him out so you can get familiar with Sammy Obeid. You can thank us later.
2. Esther Povitsky
Called "Little Esther" for obvious reasons, this young looking spitfire's comedic star is surely on the rise. In-between rocking comedy stages with her quirky and playful style, Esther has been showing of her acting chops as well as hosting popular podcasts on Deathsquad TV and on Feral Audio. When it comes to Esther, it's easy to see that she loves to laugh at herself and in turn, delivers the laughs almost effortlessly. She was also tapped to shoot her own pilot with MTV so in the upcoming year, we are all hoping to see a lot more of her You go girl!
1. Jesus Trejo
This guy's bio says that "he has been described as one of funniest young comics to look out for," and we couldn't agree more. Long Beach native Jesus has a passion for stand-up comedy and it shows on stage with the amusing and entertaining way he looks at life, his family, and though storytelling that leave audiences wanting more. And if more is what they want, then more is what they'll get. 2012 brought him a recurring part on TBS's Sullivan & Son and with the trail he is blazing, it would seem there will be no denying or avoiding Jesus Trejo in 2013. And really, why would you want to anyways?
