Today: Hindu Pirates playing live on KXLU (88.9 FM) at 5 p.m.

This afternoon, Costa Mesa youngsters Hindu Pirates are shipping out to the KXLU (89.9 FM) studio
for a live performance. They'll be pillaging LA airwaves from 5 to 6p.m. Frequently played and praised by various DJs at the station, it was probably a matter of time before the band's tubular, throwback surf tunes were tapped for an in-studio session.

If nothing else, it's great publicity for their show at House of Blues, Anaheim on July 9 with Rye Douglas Band, The Union Line and Pacific Hurt. It also doubles as a record release show for their full-length debut, Pelican Daze. Look for more information on that when the boys are featured in next week's Locals Only column.

The recent exposure is pretty impressive, especially when you consider that vocalist Austin Ferreira, guitarist Casey Snyder, bassist Derek Bostelman and drummer Ben Tinsley just graduated high school. The youngest member, guitarist Joey Lobasso, is still a sophomore. But hey, when you have can reinterpret one of the OC's most time honored genres, age ain't nothin' but a number. We're interested to see if the Pirates continue to ride this wave of buzz through the summer and come out leaner and meaner on the other side.
