The Wisdom Of Cass McCombs

Cass McCombs is one of the smartest musicians you probably don't follow yet.

The sage musician from Northern California may shy away from the media, but when McCombs speaks, his words inspire. He has released nine studio albums and was dubbed “one of the great songwriters of his time” by The New York Times.

McCombs' latest album Mangy Love includes “Run Sister Run,” a song whose music video showcases 18-year-old Tracie Léost, a Manitoba-native who ran over 70 miles (when she was 16) to raise awareness for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada. Along the way, Léost raised more than $6,000 for the Families First Foundation, which helps families of victims.

“Run Sister Run” may spotlight Léost, but was actually inspired by another poignant woman: Cecily McMillan, the Occupy Wall Street activist who was arrested and convicted of second-degree assault of a police officer — a conviction has been widely protested as unjust.

“I wanted to write a song about the women that I knew and admired for their work,” McCombs told MTV.com. “They have way more guts than most of us guys, as far as activism and community organizing. And the Cecily McMillan story I really thought was messed up. The first two verses start with her as a character, and then it kind of extends to other women that I knew, and then kind of flips inside because I realize that I can’t write from the female perspective. So it goes back to a male perspective and then it kind of ends in uncertainty.”
