The Steelwells Eliminated From the 'Choose the Cover of Rolling Stone' Contest

Unfortunately, The Steelwells will not get to be on the cover of Rolling Stone. The magazine today announced the eight finalists who go on to the next round: Empires, Fictionist, Lelia Broussard, Mod Sun, The Romany Rye, The Sheepdogs, Skyler Stonestreet and Tha Boogie. Rolling Stone calls these acts “The Great 8”–and told them the news via Skype. Joey Winter, the Steelwells' lead singer, talked to us while on the road to SXSW.

“We've known that we didn't make it for about a week, but we haven't been allowed to talk about it,” he says. “We're extremely grateful for everyone who voted for us, rallied to get us through the next round.”

Although naturally disappointed, Winter says it was just cool to be part of the contest in the first place. “It was just awesome to have Rolling Stone think we deserved to be in the running,” he says. “As far as what our game plan as a band is, we're just going with the flow, and we'll just keep doing what we're doing.”
