(Alt-pop four-piece the New Limb went on tour for the first time EVER this week, so they're sending Heard Mentality missives from the road. They're going to take turns guest blogging; first up is lead singer/guitarist Joey Chavez about Santa Cruz and San Francisco–Ed.)
These past two days have been memorable the way my trip to Europe was. Day
one was spent mostly in the car. We picked up our bassist Dave E. Berg in
Bakersfield from another band on their Northwest tour. He was elated to be
heading back instead of roasting with the rest of SoCal. We didn't have a
show that day, but we played and sang songs late into the night with our
friends, Keith and Jamie, who let us stay in their communal house in Santa
Cruz. Keith is a cooking prodigy and spent hours preparing an entirely
organic BBQ feast for us. He also made specialty drinks with spices,
tequila, honey and jalapenos!

We slept until about 10 a.m. and Keith took us to a beach where we hiked
through the forest that lined the sand. We got to San Francisco around
2:30 p.m. and I instantly remembered why I love this city. It feels like a
real city. Everywhere you look, history meets the present and you can't
help getting this overwhelming feeling of nostalgia. It's strange to feel
nostalgic in a place you only have a few scattered memories of, but I'm
weird, so I do.
Dan, Lauren and I got in an argument with a meter-maid (though he was male
so a meter-man) over whether he told us we could park at this curb or not
and he ended up giving us a $75 ticket. This was the lowest point of the
day. We went over to Mission Street to pass out CD samplers and had coffee
at Mission Creek Cafe, which was delicious.
Our show at Kimo's was great. The soundman knew what he was doing and made
us sound good for what turned out to be a great show. We made a lot of new
friends and sold a bunch of CD's. We met two men named Lester and Richie who
heard our cover song “Bizarre Love Triangle/Time After Time” on a radio
station in San Francisco called Live 105. It turns out they loved the song and
decided to drive an hour to see us! Very cool guys.
We've been offered drugs both days, which is surprising. I guess people
express appreciation in many different ways. I prefer the traditional
handshake and kind words approach over the former.
I'm typing this in my friend Mahina's apartment in San Francisco.
