Steamers Jazz Club and Café is Closing

RIP Steamers

For 20 years, Steamers in Downtown Fullerton has been the kind of place you visit every month or you forgot even existed. The long and narrow venue that's not quite a restaurant or a bar has welcomed aging big bands, college folk acts, and jazz celebrities that are still living for the swing. It went through a cocktail renaissance and started selling some of the best drinks in the county, all while still serving the same, crappy flatbreads. Today, it is Orange County's only true jazz club, because well, live jazz at a spaghetti restaurant doesn't quite count (sorry, Spaghettinis). But last Friday, the Weekly received word that the iconic club is indeed closing its doors for good.

Terrence Love, the owner and big personality around Steamers, tried to keep a lid on the fact that the place was for sale, but rumors began circling late last year, and were pretty much confirmed when an ABC transfer of liquor license went up in the window. "I don't count my chickens before the eggs are hatched," Love explains, " I've had three prospective buyers in the last four years, and all have fallen through." The sale was confirmed Friday, however, in a Facebook announcement from assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva (D-Fullerton).

As of now, Steamers is slated to become Evan's Brewery, as in Evan's Lager of Anaheim. The stage will remain, and supposedly there will be live music on the weekends - if it will be of the jazz variety is still to be determined.

No concrete closing date has been announced, but until then, you might want to take the chance to stop by and enjoy an old fashioned and some of the last jazz you'll hear flowing out into the streets of Downtown Fullerton, or any street in OC for that matter.
