The sons of Dr. Dre and Eazy-E have finally put out some music together to honor their fathers' N.W.A. legacy. Almost six months after running a cover story about the DNA Project, featuring Dre's son Curtis Young and Eazy-E's offspring Lil Eazy-E and E3, we've seen a publicly-released glimmer of what they're working on out of the Snoop-owned Lake Forest-based studio which is home base for their label Serious Pimp Records. What track does the trio decide to lead with? Why, a remake of “Straight Outta Compton,” of course.
Recently, the lead single from N.W.A.'s immortal eponymous debut saw it's 25th anniversary. In addition to bringing the sons together, SP's Vice President of Artists and Recordings Bigg A (a long time friend of Eazy-E) says the re-make is the gangsta rap anthem is something he never thought he'd live to see.
“In reality [Young, Lil E and E3] come from the nut sacks of the N.W.A. forefathers,” Bigg A says. “So for me to hear them 25 years later, it's an honor for me to see these guys working together and it's honor to see them represent the east side of Compton.”
The track, produced by West Coast legend DJ Battlecat, was designed to stay pretty close to the original. Young, Lil E and E3 each wrote brand new verses. So how does it sound?

It's worth noting that Dre produced the original track with DJ Yella in 1988, but never rapped on it. However, Curtis Young–who was also born and raised in Compton and fully represents the Hub City–was more than anxious to step up to fill the void with his own rhymes, as do Lil E (Eric Wright Jr.) and E3 (Derek Wright) who comes in at the end of this clip…kinda sounds like his dad, doesn't he? Young says that so far the single has met the approval of artists like Warren G, who he's also working with on other tracks for the DNA project that are supposed to add a bit of an EDM element to a foundation of G-funk –another thing we all probably never thought we'd see. “If we can step into a different genre with our music and tie the EDM to something then it has a legacy and dynasty behind it, why not?” Young says.
Young, Lil E, and E 3 are performing the “Straight Outta Compton” remake live on Saturday, February 1 at the Tap House in Huntington Beach as part of Serious Pimp's first-ever artist showcase, featuring S.L.A.M. Squad, AV LMKR, Indian Blue and 16 year-old rapper Mike Slice. The event starts at 7 p.m. For full details, click here.
