Quantum-mechanics complicated and Lindsay-Lohan crazy, Melt Banana's intriguing noise rock has earned the Tokyo band a strong cult following in the states. The slashing, unintelligible yelps of Yasuko Onuki--is she singing in Japanese or gibberish?--ride over whiplash rhythms rippling with effects-laden guitar and aggressive electronica flourishes. The songs are allowed very little room to breathe but there is a smart pacing to the music that keeps it from becoming a mind-numbing assault--although many listeners will likely disagree.
