OC Weekly Seeking Freelance Music Writers
The insane asylum is looking for more inmates to join our freaky little family.
OC Weekly is on the hunt for writers with experience and desire to report on the local music scene for the print section and our music blog, Heard Mentality. We're looking for stories that go beyond the average 20-minute band interview and late night show reviews. We need you to dig deeper.
For a few examples, look at multi-sourced, well-reported stories like Gabriel San Roman's piece questioning the hip-hop gentrification of Santa Ana, interesting, in-depth profiles like the this one about mass murdering sicko Wade Michael Page and his connection to the OC Music scene by yours truly, or even jumping on newsier stories like the closing of Detroit Bar last year. And of course if you have a witty, local-leaning list that pairs will with an illustration, like this one about OC punks by Damian Bloor, we're open to that.
We're also always on the lookout for those of you who consider yourself the preeminent expert on a particular scene--garage rock, punk, EDM, country, Cambodian folk music, whatever strikes your fancy.
If you have writing and reporting chops and are interested in being a part of the best (um, only) alternative Weekly in OC, contact me at email@example.com with the subject line "OC WEEKLY FREELANCE WRITING." Be sure to include some samples of your writing, and a resume if you have one.
Ideal candidates would be able to pitch and develop their own stories in addition to receiving assignments, so please include some suggestions of things you would be interested in writing about if given the chance.
Lastly: Please remember that this is a freelance opportunity. Nobody (especially us) is here to get rich. But our freelance pay is in line with the pay currently offered by others in the market. If you're interested in raising DESMADRE, give us a shout.
