"You would think that a rock star being married to a supermodel would be one of the greatest things in the world," David Bowie once said. "It is."

Bowie was more than a rock star; he was a charismatic artist who influenced music, fashion, and politics—equivalently. Germany's Federal Foreign Office thanked him "for helping to bring down the [Berlin] wall."  His arsenal of spellbinding personas challenged gender and sexual stereotypes.

Bowie's career—a successful series of artistic risks—influenced generations and traversed musical genres. If Bowie wasn't your favorite musician, he was certainly your favorite musician's favorite musician.

Tony Visconti, Bowie's longtime producer who knew of the singer's illness, summed up Bowie's legacy with utmost clarity: "His death was no different from his life — a work of Art."

Bowie's final album, Blackstar was released on his 69th birthday, just two days before his death. "He made 'Blackstar' for us, his parting gift." Visconti said.

"His music played a very strong part in British musical history, and I'm proud to think of the huge influence he has had on people all around the world," Paul McCartney posted on Instagram. "I send my deepest sympathies to his family and will always remember the great laughs we had through the years. His star will shine in the sky forever."
