Musical Makeovers: Why They Suck

If you haven't seen Lady Gaga's latest video, “You and I“, in which she transforms to look like a dude, then you were probably confused by last night's opening of the VMAs. Yes, Lady Gaga can play a convincing roughed-up guy, but her chameleon skills aren't easy to come by. It doesn't matter how many stylists you have, how many producers work for you, or how much dough the record label throws your way, because ultimately if you don't have the chops don't bother changing your look (it won't help). With out a doubt real iconic artists, like Lady Gaga, Madonna, and David Bowie, have the talent to pull off different styles and branch out to different genres. Some pay off and some definitely don't.

We recently heard the new Marina and the DiamondsRadioactive” track in which she debuts her new persona called Electra Heart with the only difference is a blond wig, and a more mainstream pop dance sound as oppose to her semi-indie uniqueness she sported before. Why is it when pop stars “redo” themselves the only transformation is going from brunette to blond?

Some artists think that because they've done all they can in their particular category, and have been successful in it, that they easily do it in another genre. Garth Brooks, the king of country music, must have thought if I go “alternative” not only can I gain more fans, but I can gain more money. But no one in their right mind would buy a chubby, cowboy hat-wearing dad as a cool alternative singer/songwriter. And so Chris Gains was born, or shall we say Chris Angel's older brother. We think Brook has been MIA for the past decade for a reason.

Jewel is a very talented singer/songwriter, and we can also understand that singing the same heartbreak ballad can get tiring after a while. In 2003, Jewel wanted to shake things up by releasing a full-fledged pop album 0304 (such a cool and mysterious album title). But we're thinking Jewel didn't just go pop for the sake of writing a dance track. She wanted to actually dance. Buy hey, who doesn't want to go slutty every now and then?

This is just funny, and we're writing Taylor Momsen's makeover as simple as teen rebellion since we all went through the “goth” phase.

Pat Boone's musical makeover is just sad. Given the fact that we were too young to ever enjoy Boone belt it out back in the '50s, it was definitely embarrassing seeing grandpa wearing a black leather vest and suit at the Grammys in the late '90s. It didn't matter why he was doing it (blame the album In a Metal Mood: No More Mr. Nice Guy) just that he was and it was tragic for everyone involved.
