More Favorite Things!

In this week's Weekly, I blab about some of my favorite things in music this year. Since my ego clearly cannot be contained to just a half page on a newspaper, I've got even more favorite things here (as referenced at the end of the article–that's what we call “convergence” in the biz).

FAVORITE EERIE TREND
The most buzzed-about indie band in the first half of the year was
Vampire Weekend, for suresies. Ra Ra Riot drew a ton of attention in
the latter half of '08. The weird thing is that their lead singers
sound almost exactly alike. Pop will eat itself, indeed.

FAVORITE BALLSY MOVE

You're Kanye West. You're a famous rapper. So for your next album how
about this: no rapping! West also has the distinction of the best arena
show with the ludicrously theatrical “Glow in the Dark Tour,” so
hopefully this praise will keep him happy for a while.

FAVORITE SONG TO SING IN ROCK BAND

“Hard to Handle” by the Black Crowes, available as downloadable content
early this year and supplanting Iron Maiden's “Run to the Hills.”

FAVORITE WACKY COLLABORATION

Montreal-based electrofunkers Chromeo and Darryl Hall on epsiode 10 of Web series “Live from Darryl's House.” Yeah, it ruled.

FAVORITE OVERLY LONG SINGLE
“I Will Possess Your Heart” by Death Cab for Cutie clocks in at 8:35, but it really doesn't feel that long. Honest! The truncated radio version, about half that, is kind of a waste.

FAVORITE SONG TO DANCE TO
“Ready for the Floor,” Hot Chip. I am so ready.

FAVORITE LOSS OF INNOCENCE

When I found out what “Superman that ho” from “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” actually referred to. Yeesh..

FAVORITE RICKROLL

It's gimmicky and played out at this point, but for sheer impressiveness alone, how can you not dig the Barackroll?
