Lou Reed Bows Out of Coachella and Several Other Gigs

Looks like we won't be hearing any of Lou Reeds Metal Machine Music in Indio this year. The former front man of the Velvet Underground just pulled out of Coachella and scrapped shows in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Monterrey.

Regarded as the eldest of the elder statesmen on this year's festival lineup (next in line is the newly re-discovered Rodriguez, who is also 71 years-old), Reed's legendary song catalog is going to be sorely missed, even if his live performance these days leaves something to be desired. He's still as symbolic as former Oldchella alumni like Leonard Cohen, Paul McCartney and Roger Waters.

Three of Reed's other upcoming gigs–April 14 at the Warfield in San Francisco, April 16 at the Golden State Theatre in Monterey and April 17 at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Los Angeles–are also scratched off his calendar. Right now, The Orpheum's website gives a cancellations are due to “unavoidable complications.”
No replacement act has been scheduled for Coachella at this time. One thing is for sure, whoever they get should be equally as iconic and exponentially easier to interview.
