What's better than going to the movies in the summertime? Going to the movies at the BEACH in the summertime!
Non-profit Long Beach Cinematheque has announced its series of summer movies, which will play Monday through Thursday in Long Beach.
The Monday night shows are dubbed Mondo Mondays, through Logan Crow's Mondo Celluloid (the guy behind the Long Beach Art Theatre's Friday midnight screenings and annual zombie walk, among other fun stuff), screening cult films at the beach off Junipero Ave.
Tuesday through Thursday will see family films and classics at Alfredo's Beach Club (on the beach at Cherry Ave.). A schedule of the Alfredo's screenings will be revealed June 27 at lbcinema.org.

I sat down with Mr. Crow to find out a bit more about these Long Beach screenings.
OC Weekly: Where are the films shown, actually on the beach?
Crow: Yep! We set up a giant inflatable screen, and a great surround
speaker system, right on the sand. Our location is at the bluff off
Junipero, just south of Ocean Blvd. — drive down the Junipero ramp, park
on the right for free, and the screen is on the left next to the
concession shack. Alfredo's Beach Club will be there to sell snacks and
sodas, and we may have a food truck or two as well.
Do people sit on the sand and then bring chairs/blankets?
Exactly. There's plenty of seating on the sand, but for comfort
we suggest blankets or low-back chairs. Out of courtesy for the people
behind you, we ask that people consider the height of their chairs.
What's Alfredo's Beach Club?
Alfredo's Beach Club is a great organization that has been
putting on family-friendly films on the beach for almost a decade, every
summer on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. This year they
invited MondoCelluloid.com to program a series of drive-in classics, and
offered us their fantastic beach location on Monday nights. I wanted to
select a list of films that speak to many genres of classic cinema —
there's a couple of cult classics in there, a campy musical, a Western,
and one of the scariest horror films of all time. I think we put
together a great mix, and Alfredo's got a great selection of
family-friendly films lined up to complement our more adult-oriented
fare.
Can people bring food/drinks/alcohol?
People are definitely welcome to bring their own food and snacks. Alcohol is not permitted on the beach.
Any sort of special events planned (e.g. when you've had bands soundtrack a film)?
Nothing official yet, but we're working on some pretty cool ideas for Grease 2 and Roller Boogie!
How much does it cost to go?
These screenings are FREE! Donations are always greatly
appreciated, as they help us keep these events going. We welcome
donations at lbcinema.org and at our events.
