Gettin' Made: Home Ec in Silver Lake Closing

Crafty friends, it's with a heavy heart that I share this news. Late last week, Jenny Ryan announced the closing of the brick and mortar side of Home Ec in Silver Lake at the end of July.

After the jump, details on the craft-class-slash-supply-shop's final weeks.

In an announcement posted on the Home Ec shop blog on Thursday, Jenny shared some insight as to why the supercute store is shuttering up:

“There are many reasons I came to this (hard and labored-over) decision. Of course the fact that we're in the midst of The Great Depression Jr. isn't helping anyone in retail nowadays, and we are no exception, but that's not the whole story. We could probably hold on a while longer in our current location, maybe we'd ride out the financial storms, but if I'm being 100% honest with you, I've come to realize that my heart is not in it.”

Jenny also cited the fact that while there are definite hours a store is open, actually owning and operating a retail establishment is a 24/7 job. With the brick and mortar side of Home Ec closing on July 25, she's excited to get some of her freedom back, to explore new challenges like writing her second book and delving into fabric design.

It's important to note that while the Home Ec shop in Silverlake is closing, Home Ec on the internet will be stronger than ever. Jenny will be building on the internet side of things, offering more craft supplies, books and fabrics, as well as beefing up the blog with tutorials and articles, and will even be starting up a podcast at the end of August.
