A constant in the world of indie crafting for the past five years, it always brightened my day when I saw Robert Mahar of Mahar Drygoods at shows. His bright, sunny and always friendly disposition was the perfect complement to the unique and nostalgic children's products offered in his online shop. I was truly saddened last week when I received the email newsletter announcing the upcoming closing of Robert's online emporium.

Robert shared some thoughts about what Mahar Drygoods has meant to him in the shop's latest newsletter:
“Five years ago I began an entrepreneurial venture, challenging myself to create and curate a world of imaginative children's wares that valued ethical handmade production, fostered a connection between artisans and consumers, and embraced a balance between good design and quirky kindergarten humor.
It has been one of the great joys of my life to seek out, collaborate with, and champion artists, designers and crafters whose work I love and to create an original new home for them in the online marketplace. The overwhelming support we've received from customers such as yourself, the press and blogging community speaks to what a truly special place Mahar Drygoods has become.”
With the closing of Mahar Drygoods comes a promise to stick around through the rest of the 2010 holiday shopping season and a really big sale! Mahar Drygoods is known for offering a wide variety of made-to-order items from various crafters, and will continue to accept orders for these items through the end of November as well. These items are clearly called out in the product descriptions, and take 2-3 weeks to ship.
