Gettin' Made: 2 Art Shows in Long Beach This Weekend

If you're looking for plans for Saturday night, there's two art shows going on in Long Beach you should definitely check out! Stephanie Han Windham and Dao Nguyen will be exhibiting pieces at shows close enough together to make it completely convenient to visit both and tell your friends on Monday that you spent an evening looking at art while they sat on the couch watching old M*A*S*H reruns on cable.

Not that I've got anything against M*A*S*H. But you should probably get out of the house this weekend. After the jump, get all the details on these two art shows.

First up, Stephanie Han Windham will be showing a selection from her Graphic Flora series at home decor shop Sasha's.Stephanie shares some insights into this group of work:

“The Graphic Flora series was born out of my fascination with the beauty and complexity of floral forms. I wanted to create a uniquely personal world for them, a world that reflected my aesthetic and personal sensibilities, and also conveyed the wonder I feel in creating it. While my inspiration is from the natural world, I take liberties with the shapes and configurations to best serve the composition, and the backgrounds and colors are purely from my imagination. I choose to depict the forms with just lines, without color, because I'm interested in their shapes, first and foremost.”

The artist reception takes place Saturday, January 16 from 6-9pm. Sasha's is located at 3237 E Broadway in Long Beach. Can't make it Saturday night? The show will be up through February 13.

Just a short drive away from Sasha's, the California Visual Artists show will be going on at the 2nd City Council Art Gallery. Dao Nguyen has two pieces in this show, and her kinetic sculptures are sure to make your head spin faster than the teacups in her “Between Work and Play”. Dao tells us, “I try to make work that is not only thought-provoking, but also fun and accessible; both the pieces in the show attest to that.”

The California Visual Artists reception will be from 7-9 on Saturday at 2nd City Council Art Gallery at 435 Alamitos Avenue in Long Beach; sit a spell and listen to live music by Centrevol while you're there! Can't make it to the show? It'll be up through February 10.
