You don't get much more roots reggae than the Maytals. The group is credited with being first act to use the word "reggae" in song. Written by leader Toots Hibbert, "Do the Reggay" came out in Jamaica and then the U.K. in 1968. My favorite Maytals song, "Pressure Drop," appears on the 1972Harder They Come
