Fingerprints to Leave Belmont Shore

FINGERPRINTS MOVING TO NEW DIGS
According to the Press-Telegram, Fingerprints record store and Portfolio coffeehouse are teaming up to build a new location downtown. Fingerprints has been at its Belmont Shore location for 18 years, but it’s moving to the East Village Arts District next month to share a space with Portfolio’s third location—a 9,200-square-foot space at 420 E. Fourth St. Portfolio’s new digs will serve as a coffeehouse/bistro and will include a full kitchen and breakfast, lunch and dinner service. For Fingerprints, the humongous space means more room for bands to play in-store gigs. Rand Foster, Fingerprints’ owner, plans to open shop in mid-December, with double the CD and vinyl stocks. ALMOST ACOUSTIC CHRISTMAS LINEUP
You know it’s not officially Christmas until KROQ announces the Almost Acoustic Christmas lineup. This year’s holiday special will be held Dec. 11 and 12 at the Gibson Amphitheatre. A few weeks ago, we predicted the Smashing Pumpkins were going to headline night one, in a lineup that included My Chemical Romance, Bad Religion, Jimmy Eat World and Anberlin. Well, we were 100 percent right. Also on night one’s roster are Social Distortion, Cake, A Day to Remember, The Dirty Heads and Switchfoot. Night two’s roster has Phoenix, Vampire Weekend, Brandon Flowers, The Black Keys, The Temper Trap, Neon Trees, Florence N the Machine, Edward Sharpe N the Magnetic Zeros, and Broken Bells. BOY WONDER
While most people pursue college to start their careers, Jake McMullen began his career to get into college. The 17-year-old folk guitarist from Yorba Linda recorded his first EP, Wonder, to send to colleges as a demo. With the help of local producer Barrett Slagle, a friend since childhood, McMullen went into the studio at ArtiSans Label in late summer. Slagle introduced McMullen to a few local musicians (including members of The Steelwells and The Relative Strangers). Instead of focusing on teenage angst, McMullen named his EP after one of his journals, in which he wrote about things he encountered in daily life through observations and poems. “We wonder about love, death, and life. . . . Once I started to write, I took ideas out of the journal and made songs,” he says.

The Wonder EP paid off: He was accepted to Belmont University in Nashville, though he’s still shopping around. Wherever he goes, McMullan plans to study commercial music and pursue his solo project. “After,” he says, “my plan is to do whatever I can to stay in the music business.” Before heading off for higher learning next fall, McMullen intends to record a full-length album and play more shows.
